Why do optical lenses need to be tested? Aren't they always made to exact specifications?

Yes, they are, but sometimes they don’t always come of the production line sans flaws. Testing them ensures that only optical lenses that perform exactly as specified make into market. There are also a few other reasons to test optical lenses, namely:

  • Because lenses from catalogs don’t always live up to performance expectations
  • Because it’s possible for lenses from different batches to not match each other
  • To ensure that custom-made lenses perform according to specifications

Lens attributes can more accurately be measured by using special equipment like MTF testing systems and interferometers. These devices can be configured in order to detect and analyze data from different spectral ranges such as visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet light frequencies. Some of the attributes that can be accurately measured include focal length, field curvature, distortion, and field of view.
